Anambra Lawyers Boycott Courts in Protest Against Colleague’s Kidnap

Lawyers from all branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Anambra State have initiated a one-day court boycott to demand the release of their kidnapped colleague, Mr. Chukwubuikem Azoro, Secretary of the NBA Idemili Branch. Azoro was abducted by gunmen in Abagana, Njikoka local government area, around 8:30 pm last Saturday and remains in captivity.

Mr. Chukwubuikem Obianyo, the Publicity Secretary of the Idemili branch, disclosed that a ransom had been demanded for Azoro’s release, although the amount remains undisclosed.

The NBA’s state-wide boycott aims to support the Idemili branch’s ongoing efforts to secure Azoro’s freedom. Mr. I.C. Nsofor, Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries of NBA branches in Anambra State, emphasized the collective decision to stand against such criminal acts.

A statement from the lawyers highlighted their resolve: “In response to this distressing situation, the members of the Idemili Branch have unanimously resolved to take a stand against such criminal acts. Therefore, all members of the NBA Idemili Branch shall be boycotting appearances in all courts within and outside our jurisdiction. Additionally, members of Idemili branch pledge to abstain from representing individuals charged with kidnapping or armed robbery until further notice. This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to justice and the safety of our members and the community at large.”

The statement further called on authorities to expedite efforts to secure Azoro’s release and take decisive action against his captors. The public was urged to condemn such violence and support the victim and his family during this difficult time.
