Anambra Government Rescues Pregnant Teens from Alleged ‘Baby Factory’ in Umunya
In a joint operation, the Anambra State Government and security forces successfully raided a suspected ‘baby-making factory’ in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of the state, rescuing six pregnant teenagers.
The operation, led by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, exposed the facility named ‘Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity’ during a routine inspection by the Health Facility, Accreditation, and Monitoring Unit.
Following a request to see the on-duty doctor and questioning the facility’s lack of registration, nurses on the premises hastily locked up the hospital and fled. Subsequently, security operatives, including OCHA-Brigade, Civil Defence Corps, and the Police, collaborated with the monitoring team to gain access.
Dr Obidike revealed the shocking discovery within the facility, uncovering six underage pregnant girls aged 14, 15, 16, 17, and 21, allegedly held against their will. They reported being housed by a self-acclaimed doctor, Mr Odili Ossai from Delta State, who is currently at large.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging residents to promptly report any illegal activities, malpractices, or concerns related to healthcare services in the state. The government remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and will take decisive actions against those involved in such illicit operations.
