Anambra 2025: Federal High Court Restrains Moghalu from Parading as Labour Party Flagbearer

The Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has issued an interim order stopping Chief George Moghalu from presenting himself as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the November 8, 2025 Anambra State election.

Justice Nwaukwa Ukamaka, who presided over the matter, ruled that Moghalu should cease all claims to the party’s ticket following a motion brought by members of the Labour Party’s Interim State Executive Committee in Anambra, led by Okoye Peter Chukwunulu and Jerry Nnubia. The applicants argued that Moghalu’s candidacy emanated from the faction loyal to former National Chairman Julius Abure, whose leadership was nullified by the Supreme Court earlier this year.

The April 4, 2025 judgment of the apex court had removed Abure and recognised Senator Nenadi Usman as head of the Labour Party’s National Caretaker Committee, declaring invalid all nominations and lists generated under Abure’s leadership. Justice Ukamaka referenced that ruling in granting the restraining order.

The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to process or accept any nomination forms or documents presented by the Abure-backed faction in Anambra until the substantive suit is determined. In addition, Moghalu is to be served through substituted means by pasting the court documents at his residence in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area.

Justice Ukamaka further ordered all parties to maintain the status quo until the case resumes for hearing on August 26, 2025.

The decision prolongs uncertainty over who will represent the Labour Party in the Anambra governorship election, as only aspirants backed by the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker leadership remain recognised in law.
