Anambra 2025: APGA Members Decamp to Labour Party in Ogbaru, Vow to Unseat Gov. Soludo
Over 100 members of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State have defected to the Labour Party (LP), citing dissatisfaction with the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his failure to fulfill campaign promises. The decampees, predominantly from Ogbaru local government area, made their intentions clear during a gathering at the Onitsha Holiday Resort.
The reception, organized by Chief Emeka Nwosu, the Labour Party chairman in Ogbaru LGA, and attended by prominent LP figures including Hon. Afam Ogene and gubernatorial aspirant Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, underscored the growing discontent within APGA ranks.
Former APGA member Hon. Ndubuisi Igwilo, who spearheaded the defection, accused Governor Soludo of betraying the trust of the electorate by failing to support Peter Obi’s presidential bid and neglecting his responsibilities as governor. Igwilo highlighted Soludo’s unfulfilled promise to conduct local government elections within his first two years in office as a key factor in the decision to defect.
Speaking at the event, Igwilo emphasized the need for a change in leadership, stating, “It is not an achievement that a governor will come and do a borehole and announce it all over the place. I can do boreholes for the people. These are things individuals can do.” His sentiments were echoed by Hon. Ogene, who criticized Soludo’s governance approach and lauded the courage of the decampees in joining the Labour Party.
Gubernatorial aspirant Valentine Ozigbo seized the opportunity to rally support for the Labour Party, declaring, “Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s time is up. He cannot come back for a second term because he has disappointed Ndi Anambra.” Ozigbo pledged to harness the state’s potential and usher in a new era of leadership if elected.
The defection from APGA to the Labour Party signals a significant shift in Anambra’s political landscape and sets the stage for a fiercely contested 2025 gubernatorial election. As the countdown to the polls begins, all eyes are on the emerging alliances and the potential impact on the state’s future trajectory.
