Amotekun Overwhelmed: Villagers Flee in the Face of Bandit Onslaught in Ondo
Residents of several villages in Ondo State are fleeing their homes as herdsmen-cum-bandits continue their relentless attacks, overwhelming the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as ‘Amotekun.’ These attacks, marked by violence, kidnappings, and occasional killings, have not only disrupted daily life but also raised concerns about the safety of lives and property in the affected areas.
Research reveals a grim picture, with over 4,000 farmers falling victim to such attacks in the South Western part of Nigeria since 2015. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data report indicates that Nigeria has lost at least 8,343 lives to the farmers-herders conflict since 2005.
In response to the escalating crisis, the governors of the six South-West states established Amotekun on January 9, 2020, with the aim of enhancing security in the region. However, despite governmental support, Amotekun is facing significant challenges in countering the persistent attacks from the herdsmen.
Residents, speaking anonymously, express doubts about Amotekun’s effectiveness in regaining control of areas dominated by herdsmen. One resident, Tinu, notes the eerie loneliness of roads and communities, citing instances where entire communities were forced to evacuate due to the intensity of attacks.
Reports suggest that even local monarchs have resorted to seeking additional local security support to assist Amotekun in their struggle against the bandits. While Amotekun remains tight-lipped about their challenges, residents, like Joe, a graduate from Adekunle Ajasin University, highlight the powerlessness of Amotekun in certain parts of the state.
Travelers face perilous journeys, with several areas being labeled as “no-go zones.” Farmers, too, bear the brunt of the crisis, with tales of attacks on farmlands and destruction of crops. Femi Adeyele, a farmer in Ifedore Local Government Area, recounts an incident where he was attacked while defending his cassava farm, emphasizing the dire security situation.
The situation has left many questioning the efficacy of Amotekun and the overall security measures in place, as the bandit onslaught continues to disrupt the lives of residents in Ondo State.
