Dangote Group Clarifies EFCC’s Inquiry, Vows Cooperation in Investigation
In response to recent inquiries by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, issued a statement reaffirming the organization’s commitment to aiding the investigation.
The EFCC officials visited the Dangote Group headquarters in Lagos to examine details regarding the foreign exchange allocations from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) dating back to 2014.
According to Dangote, the group received a letter on December 6, 2023, seeking information on foreign exchange allocations. In the statement, he explained, “We responded to the EFCC, seeking clarification on the subsidiaries or companies within the Group they required information on. Despite our request for additional time, the EFCC insisted on a limited timeframe.”
Dangote expressed that the EFCC did not provide the sought clarification and did not grant an extension, demanding the complete set of documents within the stipulated timeframe. Despite these challenges, the group assured the EFCC of its commitment to providing information and pledged to share documents in batches.
“On January 4, 2024, our team delivered the first batch of documents to the EFCC. However, officers insisted on visiting our offices to collect the same set of documents directly,” Dangote explained.
Highlighting the Group’s commitment to compliance, Dangote emphasized, “To our knowledge, no accusations of wrongdoing have been made against any company within our Group. We are only responding to a request for information to assist the EFCC with their ongoing investigation.”
Despite the situation, Dangote reiterated the group’s commitment to providing the EFCC with necessary information and cooperation. He assured stakeholders that the first batch of documents had been delivered and the group was actively working to compile and submit the remaining documents.
“As a law-abiding and ethical corporate citizen, we remain committed to providing the EFCC with all necessary information and cooperation. We remain steadfast in our belief in Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law,” he stated.
Dangote concluded by calling for understanding and patience from stakeholders, promising to keep them informed of any further developments.
