After U.S. Airstrikes, Sokoto Warns Neighbours as Lakurawa Fighters Flee

Authorities in Sokoto State have placed neighbouring states on alert following U.S. airstrikes that struck Lakurawa terrorist camps in Tangaza Local Government Area, forcing suspected fighters to flee across borders.

Investigations indicate that the airstrikes hit a Lakurawa camp in Tandami village, near the Illela border axis. Local residents reported that several terrorists were killed, while others escaped into surrounding areas. Security sources say the development prompted warnings to neighbouring states to tighten surveillance and take precautionary measures.

In a related development, security agencies have uncovered additional suspected explosive devices in Jabo town, Tambuwal Local Government Area, days after the initial strike. Community members said a metallic object similar to a previously discovered explosive was found during excavation, prompting authorities to halt digging over fears it could be unexploded ordnance.

Police and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams have since cordoned off the area and urged residents to stay away until the site is declared safe. The Police Area Commander for Tambuwal, Muhammed Augie, warned residents against scavenging metal fragments from strike locations, noting that such materials could pose serious danger.

Despite the warnings, local leaders expressed concern that some residents continued to collect metallic debris believed to be remnants of the explosives, reportedly to sell as scrap. The District Head of Jabo said the practice reflected a mix of poverty, poor awareness, and the absence of immediate risk communication after the incident.

Confirming the strikes, Tangaza Local Government Chairman, Isa Saleh Bashir, told the BBC that bush paths and terrorist camps were targeted. He said there was no confirmed casualty figure but noted reports that Niger Republic security patrols observed Lakurawa fighters fleeing the area.

The airstrikes, which U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform, were later confirmed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. He said the operation was carried out with Nigeria’s full cooperation and intelligence support and did not violate the country’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed troops under 8 Division and Operation FANSAN YAMMA to sustain pressure on terrorists and bandits operating in Sokoto and its environs. During a visit to Illela, he commended troops for recent gains and pledged improved welfare and infrastructure to boost morale.

Calls have also emerged for the expansion of joint military operations. Senator Ali Ndume urged the Federal Government to extend U.S.–Nigeria cooperation to the North-East, citing persistent threats from ISWAP and Boko Haram strongholds in Lake Chad, the Mandara Mountains, and Sambisa Forest.

However, some voices urged caution. The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Taraba State, Rev. Fr William Owoshiri, argued that Nigeria’s insecurity requires strong political will and better-equipped local forces, warning that foreign military involvement could offer only short-term relief.

Security operations continue across affected areas, with authorities stressing public safety and vigilance as investigations and clearance efforts remain ongoing.
