After Obi’s Visit, Malami Expresses Interest in Obidient Movement — Yunusa Tanko

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has shown interest in the Obidient Movement following a courtesy visit by Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections.

The meeting took place on Wednesday at Malami’s office in Abuja, sparking reactions across political circles. Obi, a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, continues to engage with key national figures as part of what his supporters describe as ongoing “bridge-building” efforts.

Yunusa Tanko, interim national coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, confirmed Malami’s interest in the movement in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He also shared photographs of the meeting.

“Today, the 25th of June 2025, the Obidient Movement has attracted another senior member into the Obidient Movement,” Tanko wrote. “This is in continuation of bridge building and emancipating the Nigerian people from hunger and disdain.”

In a later interview with The Cable, Tanko clarified that while Malami has not formally joined the movement, he has “shown interest” in its ideals and objectives.

The Obidient Movement, which gained national prominence during the 2023 elections, is a citizen-driven platform that supports Peter Obi’s vision for governance reform, transparency, and people-centered leadership. It continues to operate as a grassroots force pushing for political accountability and change in Nigeria.

Malami, who served as attorney-general and minister of justice from 2015 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has not issued a public statement regarding the meeting.

However, Tanko’s comments suggest that discussions between Obi and Malami may signal a broadening of the Obidient Movement’s appeal beyond its traditional support base.

Observers say the meeting reflects a strategic effort by Obi and his supporters to build alliances across party and ideological lines ahead of the 2027 elections.
