After Bobrisky’s Conviction, EFCC Investigates More Celebrities for Naira Abuse
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that numerous celebrities are under investigation and may face prosecution for naira abuse. The statement was released on Sunday, shortly after the conviction of popular crossdresser Bobrisky for similar offenses.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability and adherence to the law, stating that no one found guilty will be exempt from prosecution. “We will not relent in our operations, and the public should be cautious of violating laws against naira abuse,” said the commission.
Following the arrest of Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okunneye, earlier this month, social media users have been tagging the EFCC in posts showing videos of other celebrities allegedly engaging in more severe forms of naira abuse.
In a statement from Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at EFCC, the commission acknowledged an increase in shared video clips highlighting such abuse. Several celebrities have been called in for questioning and have provided useful statements during investigations.
The EFCC emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to protect the sanctity of the national currency and to maintain the ongoing momentum against naira abuse. The commission also noted that its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization of the economy began operations on February 7, 2024.
The Federal High Court in Lagos recently sentenced Bobrisky to six months in jail without the option of a fine for his involvement in naira abuse. The crossdresser was found guilty after video footage showed him spraying and flaunting wads of new naira notes at a movie premiere.
The judge, Abimbola Awogboro, stated that Bobrisky’s sentence should serve as a lesson for others who may consider engaging in naira abuse. He emphasized the need to stop such practices, which tarnish the country’s image.
Similarly, earlier this year, the Federal High Court in Lagos convicted actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin of spraying and stepping on new naira notes at a wedding in Lagos. Ms. Omoseyin was sentenced to six months imprisonment with the option of a N300,000 fine.
The EFCC’s recent actions against naira abuse have led to heightened public awareness and support for the commission’s efforts. The agency expressed its appreciation for the public’s involvement and dedication to upholding the integrity of the national currency.
