AFCON 2023: Where to Watch Africa’s Biggest Football Tournament
With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 just around the corner, football enthusiasts are facing uncertainty regarding how to watch the tournament, as Multichoice’s SuperSport channels have officially announced their decision not to broadcast the event this time.
This surprising development has left fans in confusion, seeking alternative options to catch the live action of their favorite teams and players. Fortunately, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has recently inked a groundbreaking TV rights agreement that will ensure coverage across sub-Saharan Africa.
In November 2023, CAF awarded the broadcasting rights for its competitions and events to Togo-based satellite TV, New World TV (NWTV). This agreement spans from 2023 to 2025, granting NWTV exclusive rights for both free-to-air and paid formats in 46 countries within sub-Saharan Africa.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe hailed the deal as a historic investment, emphasizing that it is the largest ever made by a Pan-African broadcaster in CAF’s history. He praised NWTV for its global competitiveness and innovation, especially in adapting to the evolving demands and viewing patterns of modern football audiences.
As a result of this agreement, NWTV will be the sole broadcaster for AFCON 2023, reaching audiences in numerous sub-Saharan African countries. Free-to-air stations, such as Nigeria Television Authority and others in Nigeria, can secure licenses from NWTV to broadcast matches, although it remains unclear if these stations have obtained the necessary licenses at the time of this report.
StarTimes subscribers, on the other hand, are assured access to all 52 matches of AFCON 2023, ensuring that football enthusiasts won’t miss any of the action. The exclusive broadcasting rights held by NWTV mark a significant shift in how fans will experience and engage with the upcoming tournament.
