ADC Has No Preferred Presidential Candidate for 2027, Says Interim Spokesperson
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not aligning behind any individual for the 2027 presidential race, according to Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s interim national publicity secretary. Speaking in Abuja during the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG), Abdullahi emphasized that the party is focused on institution-building rather than promoting personal ambitions.
Addressing participants at the event themed “Peace and Social Cohesion: A Panacea to Challenges of the North,” Abdullahi stated that the ADC has not entered any discussions regarding its presidential candidate. “We don’t have any favourite aspirants or candidates. We are not having any conversation at the moment,” he said. “Nobody has ever had any conversation about who will be the party’s flag bearer.”
He stressed that the party’s priority is to build a credible and strong political platform capable of delivering on its mission, rather than tailoring its structure around any individual. “The ADC is not built for anybody’s ambition. ADC is a party that is determined to give a different trajectory to Nigerian politics. We don’t have any predetermined agenda,” he added.
Abdullahi, a former minister, also noted that the ADC is working to reshape the country’s political culture, promoting national interest above individual gain. On the topic of political defections, he acknowledged the difficulty serving governors face due to political pressure and intimidation. “No serving governor would be willing to cross over because of the intimidation that they are facing,” he said. “Some of them who cannot jump to their party are saying we are endorsing their presidential candidate. No problem. But what you are seeing is a conspiracy against the Nigerian people.”
Despite the challenges, Abdullahi maintained that the ADC remains open to all Nigerians and is confident in its grassroots appeal. “The ADC welcomes everybody, but we are convinced that we are a movement that has the backing of the majority of Nigerians who are not happy with the direction this country is going,” he concluded.
