Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to be Sworn in as Ondo State Governor Today
Ondo State is set to swear in Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the new governor today in Akure, the state capital. This follows the untimely demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who passed away earlier today in a German hospital, sending shockwaves throughout the state.
Sources close to the government revealed that Aiyedatiwa, who had been serving as the acting governor, is en route from Igbokoda, where he had been on a Christmas and New Year break. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Cocoa Conference Hall in Akure, although the exact time has not been confirmed.
Governor Akeredolu, aged 67, had been battling leukemia, a condition exclusively reported by SaharaReporters in January. Despite returning to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany, he faced criticism for governing from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Recently, he took another medical leave following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Akeredolu’s health condition had garnered attention, with sources from the Alagbaka Government House confirming the governor’s struggle with leukemia—a form of blood cancer characterized by an abnormal increase in white blood cells.
As the state mourns the loss of Governor Akeredolu, all eyes are now on the transition of power as Lucky Aiyedatiwa assumes the role of governor, stepping into the responsibilities left vacant by his late predecessor.
