Abure Dares Obi, Summons Counter NEC Meeting Amid Labour Party Crisis

The Labour Party’s leadership crisis grew worse on Monday, April 7, 2025, after National Chairman Julius Abure and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi called for separate meetings of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). This comes just days after the Supreme Court gave a ruling that many believe has shaken the party’s leadership.

Abure announced his NEC meeting would hold at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Monday. The notice was shared by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh. Many see this move as Abure’s way of showing that he is still in charge of the party.

But shortly after, Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti sent out their own invitation for another NEC meeting. Their meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. According to a statement by Obi’s spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, the meeting will also include a town hall discussion with key members of the party.

Those invited to the Obi-Otti meeting include the Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, senators and House of Representatives members (both current and former), as well as past governorship candidates who are still in the party. Also invited are members of the National Caretaker Committee and representatives from labour unions like the NLC and TUC.
