Crowd chants ‘Obi–Kwankwaso’ at Eid gathering in Kano
At the annual Kwankwasiyya Eid celebration in Kano on Sunday, attendees repeatedly chanted the names of two prominent political figures, drawing attention to the presence of Peter Obi alongside host Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The event, marked by a large turnout of supporters dressed in the movement’s signature red caps, saw coordinated chants of both names as the two men acknowledged the crowd and delivered brief remarks.
Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), hosted Obi at the gathering, which also attracted other political figures including Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, and Seriake Dickson, former governor of Bayelsa State. Both were received at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano ahead of the celebration.
Speaking to attendees, Obi said his visit was centered on the Eid celebration and a courtesy visit rather than political engagement. He emphasized respect for Kwankwaso and the significance of the occasion.
He also made brief remarks about economic renewal in Kano, pointing to the need to restore industrial activity in areas such as Bompai, Sharada, and the former Bank of the North facilities. He noted that the focus of the day remained the Sallah celebration.
The gathering comes amid ongoing political discussions around possible alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi has aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Kwankwaso has indicated that any party switch would depend on securing a presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
