Abuja Set to Crack Down on ‘One Chance’ Menace: Unpainted Taxis, Buses to Face Ban

In a bid to curb the notorious ‘one chance’ criminal activities plaguing the city, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has announced plans to prohibit unpainted taxis and buses from operating on Abuja’s roads.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, emphasizing the necessity of stringent measures to tackle the ‘one chance’ menace. This criminal practice involves individuals posing as commercial drivers, exploiting and endangering unsuspecting passengers.

“We are not going to allow vehicles that are not painted with FCT color and registered by the FCTA to ply commercially in the territory. That way, you know the driver is certified by the FCT, and the buses and the taxes were also approved by the FCT,” stated Mr. Wike.

He highlighted the reduction in ‘one chance’ incidents but emphasized the need for stricter regulations. Under the new measures, Uber operators will also be required to register, allowing the government to identify and certify drivers. The goal is to enhance passenger safety and mitigate risks associated with unauthorized vehicles.

Expressing concern about the absence of an official terminal for residents to board buses, Mr. Wike outlined plans to construct three terminals in the 2024 fiscal year. This initiative aims to centralize boarding points, enabling better identification of both drivers and vehicles, ultimately contributing to a reduction in criminal activities.

“In the 2024 fiscal year, we plan to build at least three terminals for a start. This will ensure that people know the buses and taxis departing from such terminals, reducing the risk associated with hailing a taxi on the road,” explained the minister. “Our goal is to create a safer environment for commuters and minimize criminal activities in the city.”
