Abia State Governor Initiates Talks to Avert Indefinite Strike, Promises New Ministry

In a bid to forestall an impending indefinite strike threatened by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Abia State Governor Alex Otti has commenced negotiations with organized labour leaders within the state. The discussions, which commenced on Friday and are set to extend into Saturday, aim to address critical welfare issues affecting workers in Abia State.

Governor Otti assured stakeholders during the ongoing negotiations that his administration is committed to enhancing the welfare of workers. He announced plans to establish a Ministry of Labour and Productivity, emphasizing that the ministry will be led by a nominee from within the labour community. This move is intended to streamline communication and policy-making concerning labour-related matters directly affecting the state’s workforce.

Addressing financial constraints, Otti clarified that Abia State has yet to receive federal funding to facilitate the implementation of the N35,000 minimum wage stipulated by recent federal mandates. Despite this, he expressed willingness to explore avenues to meet the demands set forth by Abia workers, including the payment of outstanding salaries, arrears related to leave and promotions, and the settlement of pensions and gratuities for retirees.

Key grievances articulated by organized labour include the adherence to the previous N30,000 minimum wage, the implementation of a N35,000 palliative award, and resolving issues related to command promotions and verification procedures.

As negotiations progress, stakeholders eagerly await further developments aimed at resolving the impasse and ensuring the well-being of workers across Abia State.
