72-Year-Old Woman Murdered and Buried on Farm in Edo State

A tragic incident has occurred in Afuze, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, where a 72-year-old woman, Mrs. Vero Akazuma, was found killed and buried in a shallow grave on a farm.

The incident reportedly took place on June 17. According to sources, Mrs. Akazuma was lured to the farm by a customer under the pretext of purchasing corn. Upon arrival, she was killed by the farmer, identified only as Michael, who then buried her body in a shallow grave after collecting her money.

Concerned about her sudden disappearance, Mrs. Akazuma’s children reported her missing to the police in Auchi when she did not return home.

The breakthrough in the case came when the police traced her mobile phone to a motorcyclist who had transported her to the farm. Upon arrest, the motorcyclist confessed to dropping her off at the farm with Michael.

Following a thorough search by the security team, a shallow grave was discovered on June 24, and the decomposing body of Mrs. Akazuma was exhumed and taken to a mortuary for an autopsy.

A viral video, widely circulated, shows the combined efforts of police officers, vigilantes, and mortuary attendants in exhuming the corpse. In the video, Mr. Okonofua, the son of the deceased, expressed his grief, saying, “This is my mother; instead of only collecting her money, they also took her life. She traveled from Auchi to Afuze to purchase corn but never returned home.”

SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, stated that he would provide further updates on the incident as investigations continue.
