2027 Race: Abati Highlights Impact of Kwankwaso’s Defection to ADC
Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has said the defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could alter the balance of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on *The Morning Show* on Arise Television on Tuesday, Abati said Kwankwaso’s move, alongside supporters from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has strengthened the ADC and positioned it as a potential coalition platform for leading opposition figures.
He noted that the party now hosts several prominent politicians, including Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and Atiku Abubakar, raising the stakes for internal negotiations ahead of the election cycle.
Abati highlighted the electoral significance of Kano State, describing it as a key battleground due to its 44 local government areas and large voting population. He added that other critical states include Rivers State and Lagos State.
According to him, Kwankwaso’s influence in Kano could play a decisive role in shaping the 2027 presidential contest following his defection.
However, Abati pointed to unresolved questions within the ADC, particularly around its presidential ticket. He noted Kwankwaso’s long-standing presidential ambition and said it remains unclear whether he will secure the party’s nomination, accept a vice-presidential slot, or be part of a broader alliance.
He also referenced speculation about a possible partnership between Kwankwaso and Obi, while questioning how such an arrangement could affect Atiku Abubakar’s position within the party.
Abati said the developments mark the early stages of what could become a complex political contest within the opposition bloc as parties begin to realign ahead of 2027.
