The death toll of people who died due to Zaria central mosque collapsing in Kaduna state has risen to 10, while over thirty people are currently in hospitals across the city.
Recall that four people were confirmed dead, while 7 have sustained serious injuries.
However, a source at the palace, in an interview after the deceased’s funeral, confirmed that ten people were confirmed dead, while thirty other worshippers have been taken to some hospitals in Zaria.
The palace source, Abubakar Bamalli, had said the funeral for the deceased was conducted after the isha prayers.
Among those in attendance were the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, senior councillors, and hundreds of residents.
Earlier, a survivor, Mallam Shehu Nagari, said the incident occurred when they were in the second sujud during the Asr Prayer.
“We just heard a heavy sound and saw a portion of the mosque collapsing on some worshippers. The entire surrounding was covered by dust.
“The mosque, we were told, has existed for over 150 years and is in front of the palace. It is the central mosque, the source stressed.
Nagari said they have identified the bodies of four worshippers, while seven others who sustained serious injuries have been taken to hospital.
“We are still trying to ascertain whether there could be more deaths, he declared.
