World Cup Playoff Controversy: FIFA Set to Rule on Nigeria vs DR Congo Case
FIFA is expected to deliver a decision on Monday, February 16, 2026, concerning a protest filed by the Nigeria Football Federation over the eligibility of players used by DR Congo national football team in the 2026 World Cup African playoff final.
The NFF submitted a formal complaint on December 15, 2025, claiming that six DR Congo players who featured in the November 2025 clash were not eligible under FIFA regulations. Nigeria lost the tie on penalties in Morocco.
According to the federation, the players in question were involved in recent or improperly processed nationality changes that may have breached international eligibility rules.
Several reports indicate that FIFA has scheduled a meeting to review the matter alongside other agenda items, with a verdict expected on or around February 16.
The outcome could have significant implications for Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
