Winter Olympic Village Runs Out of Condoms After Athletes Use Over 10,000 in 72 Hours
The Winter Olympic Village in Italy has reportedly run out of condoms just three days into the Games, with athletes consuming the entire stock of 10,000 units.
An anonymous athlete told *La Stampa* that the supplies were exhausted unusually quickly. “They promised more will arrive, but it’s unclear when,” the athlete said.
Providing free condoms to athletes in the Olympic Village is a long-standing public health measure, aimed at promoting safe sex during the Games. Typically, thousands are distributed, but this year’s supply reportedly did not meet demand, depleting within 72 hours.
The anonymous athlete noted that the allocation was smaller than in previous Games. “In Paris, athletes received 300,000 condoms—roughly two per day per person—but this year’s Winter Games had fewer than 10,000 available,” according to *La Stampa*.
Attilio Fontana, governor of the Lombardy region, emphasized that providing condoms should not be a source of embarrassment. “Yes, we provide free condoms to athletes in the Olympic Village. This practice began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness about sexually transmitted disease prevention and remains important,” he said on social media.
Fontana also shared an Instagram post by Spanish figure skater Olivia Smart showing condoms branded with the Lombardy Region logo. The post has gone viral, with Smart commenting, “They have everything you need.”
This year’s Winter Olympics host approximately 2,900 athletes from 92 national committees, competing across 116 events in 16 disciplines. The 2026 Games also feature the highest proportion of female athletes in Winter Olympics history at 47%.
