Woman Who Instructed Children to Falsely Accuse Father of Rape Charged With Defamation by Police
The Enugu State Police Command has charged 29-year-old Mrs. Chisom Okonkwo with criminal defamation after she allegedly accused her husband, Mr. Okonkwo Ozioma, of raping their two young daughters.
According to police sources, Chisom, who had been having marital issues with her husband, raised an alarm claiming that he had defiled their children. Her allegations led to Ozioma’s arrest. However, medical reports later confirmed that the children had not been assaulted.
A police officer familiar with the investigation revealed that the Commissioner of Police ordered her prosecution after the medical results and statements from the children contradicted her claims. The source said the children admitted their father never touched them, adding that their mother had instructed them to lie. The first child reportedly refused to comply, while the younger ones initially supported the false story.
Court documents obtained show that the Commissioner of Police is listed as the complainant, while Chisom Okonkwo is the defendant in Charge No: CM/861c/2025 filed at the Enugu Magistrate Court. The two-count charge involves defamation of character and providing false information to the police, offences said to have been committed between August and October 27, 2024.
The charges state that she publicly accused her husband of defiling their daughters, thereby damaging his reputation, contrary to Sections 323 and 325 of the Criminal Code of Enugu State. The second count alleges that she knowingly gave false information to detectives at the State Intelligence Department, which led to her husband’s arrest and detention, an offence punishable under Section 154(1)(a)&(b) of the same law.
