Woman, Phone Repairer Arrested for Unlocking Lost Phone in Delta — Police Issue Warning
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a woman, Chinaza Ani, and a phone repair technician for allegedly unlocking a lost phone by flashing it—a process that wipes the device to bypass security.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the incident highlights the dangers of tampering with found mobile devices, regardless of intent. In a video statement shared on social media, Edafe emphasized that even actions such as flashing a phone could raise suspicion and result in arrest.
“When you find a phone on the ground, please pick any incoming calls and make efforts to return it to the owner or take it to the nearest police station,” Edafe advised.
He also issued a strong caution to phone technicians, warning them against unlocking or flashing devices without proper authorization, especially when the password is unknown or the owner is not reachable.
“Phone repairers should avoid flashing phones just because a customer says they forgot their password,” he said. “Doing so without verifying ownership could land you in trouble.”
The arrest has sparked discussion online, with many users expressing surprise over the legal risks associated with handling found phones.
Authorities have reiterated that both the finder and any technician involved in unauthorized unlocking could face criminal charges, as such actions may interfere with ongoing investigations or compromise personal data.
