Woman Files for Divorce After Three Months of Marriage in Kaduna Shari’a Court

A woman, Fatima Usman, has ended her three-month marriage after filing for divorce at the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna State on Tuesday, May 5.

She approached the court seeking dissolution of her marriage to Sulaiman Adamu through Khul’i, an Islamic divorce process that allows a wife to request separation by returning her dowry.

Fatima told the court that the agreed dowry for the marriage was ₦100,000. She stated her willingness to refund half of the amount.

“The dowry is ₦100,000 but I am willing to pay half of the dowry which is ₦50,000,” she said.

The defendant, Sulaiman Adamu, confirmed his acceptance of the request when the court asked for his response.

“Yes, it’s okay by me,” he said.

Presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, explained that under Islamic law, a woman seeking Khul’i may return the dowry to secure a divorce, whether the amount is equal to, lower, or higher than what was originally paid.

The court subsequently ruled that the marriage had been dissolved and ordered Fatima to return the agreed portion of the dowry immediately.
