Woman Divorces Husband Over Refusal to Fix Damaged Mobile Phone
In a surprising case at a Shari’a court on Tuesday, Zainab Alhassan finalized her divorce from husband Tijjani Muhammad after he reportedly refused to repair her mobile phone, valued at N70,000.
Zainab told the court she no longer wished to continue the marriage and sought a **Khul’i divorce**, a process in which a woman returns her dowry to end the union. She said she was willing to refund the N30,000 dowry she had received to regain her freedom.
According to Zainab, the dispute began while she was watching a movie on her phone. She claimed her husband became angry, snatched the phone, and smashed it. She admitted, however, that she had no witnesses to corroborate her account.
Tijjani Muhammad denied destroying the phone but said he had no objection to the divorce.
Presiding judge Mu’awiyya Shehu granted the Khul’i divorce and dismissed Zainab’s request for the phone to be repaired.
