Court Orders Divorce-Seeking Woman to Pay Husband N120,000
A Shari’a court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, has ordered a woman, Hauwa’u, to refund a total of N120,000 to her estranged husband, Malam Baballe Ibrahim, as part of their divorce settlement.
The ruling, delivered by Judge Malam Kabir Muhammad, followed the dissolution of the one-year-old marriage through khul’i —a process that allows a wife to end her marriage by returning the dowry received.
According to the judgment, Hauwa’u must return N100,000 paid as dowry and an additional N20,000 given to her parents during the marriage introduction ceremony, locally known as Kudin Gaisuwa.
Ibrahim, a businessman, initially resisted granting the divorce and claimed he had spent heavily on Hauwa’u during their relationship and marriage. He told the court he provided for all her needs, including skincare and hair products, clothing, and makeup.
Despite his resistance, the court upheld Hauwa’u’s request for divorce and permitted her to retrieve her personal belongings from Ibrahim’s home.
