Woman Arraigned in Anambra for Alleged Child Theft, Sale
A 27-year-old woman, Edna Friday, was arraigned before a Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State, on Wednesday for allegedly stealing a baby girl. The unemployed defendant, who hails from Urhobo in Delta State, faces two charges of conspiracy and child stealing.
According to the prosecutor, Corporal Amaechi Augustine, Friday and other suspects still at large allegedly committed the offence on January 19 in Awka. The prosecution claimed that the defendant participated in both the theft and illegal sale of the child. The alleged crimes violate Section 495(a) of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Vol. II, Revised Laws of Anambra (1991, as amended) and Section 33(4) of the Child Rights Law of Anambra.
Friday pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding Chief Magistrate, U.E. Onochie, granted her bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in like sum. The case was adjourned until March 19 for mention.
