Why We’ll not Participate in Rivers LG Election – Police
The Rivers State Police Command has announced its decision to comply with a Federal High Court ruling that prohibits its involvement in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. The announcement comes in the wake of protests led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the conduct of the elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.
In a statement released on Thursday, Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko emphasized that the command respects the court’s decision, which was issued on September 30, 2024, and will not provide security during the election. This follows a previous restraining order from July 19, 2024, preventing police and other security agencies from engaging in the electoral process.
Iringe-Koko clarified that while the police will not participate in the election, they remain committed to maintaining public order and will take necessary actions to prevent any security breaches. “The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to maintaining law and order and will not stand idly by in the face of potential disturbances,” she stated.
The announcement was made after PDP chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka and supporters staged a protest demanding that the police and the Department of State Services adhere to the court orders. They submitted a petition along with the court’s judgment to officials at both agencies.
Iringe-Koko urged citizens to remain peaceful and cooperative, highlighting the importance of following the rule of law during this critical period. “The Nigeria Police Force encourages all parties to seek appropriate legal redress if they feel aggrieved by any decisions or actions related to the election process,” she added.
