“Why We Won’t Participate in Rivers LG Poll” – PDP
The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that it will not participate in the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. The decision was made public by the state party chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, following a stakeholders’ meeting held at the PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt.
Chukwuemeka emphasized that the PDP, as a law-abiding political organization, is awaiting the outcome of a court case brought by the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the legality of the election. He urged party members to avoid involvement in any election-related activities until the legal proceedings are resolved.
“We have just concluded a stakeholders’ meeting and made the decision that, as a law-abiding party, we will not participate in the scheduled local government election on October 5,” Chukwuemeka said.
He explained that the court had issued an order to maintain the status quo, effectively putting the election on hold until a final ruling is made. The party will abide by this directive and wait for the court’s decision before making any further moves.
This development comes after conflicting statements from leaders within the APC. Both Emeka Beke, the reinstated APC Chairman, and Tony Okocha, the sacked Caretaker Committee Chairman, recently held separate press conferences with opposing views on the party’s stance regarding the election.
