Why We Withheld Certificate of Lagos Corper Who Criticised Tinubu – NYSC
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has explained why it withheld the discharge certificate of Lagos-based corps member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, who earlier accused the scheme of punishing her for criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the NYSC described reports linking the action to Uguamaye’s political comments as “unfounded and false.” It said the decision was based solely on disciplinary grounds and was in line with established rules.
According to the statement, Uguamaye, with state code LA/24B/8325, is among 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for failing to comply with service requirements. The scheme stated that her service year was extended by two months because she did not attend the mandatory April 2025 biometrics clearance, an offence covered under the NYSC bye-laws.
“This is a standard procedure and not unique to her case,” the statement read. “The principle of equal treatment was applied in full, and such extensions for non-compliance are a longstanding tradition within the NYSC.”
The corps management urged the public to avoid politicising the matter, insisting that the scheme remains committed to carrying out its mandate in line with the constitution.
Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, had recently alleged that her certificate was withheld as retaliation for a viral TikTok video in which she criticised the Tinubu government and complained about living conditions in Lagos. Her claims drew widespread public attention and support from political figures, rights groups, and activists before the NYSC’s clarification.
