Disaster Warning: FG Puts 15 States on Fresh High-Risk Flood Alert (Full List)
The Federal Government has issued a flood alert to 15 Northern states, warning of possible severe flooding between August 10 and 14, 2025, due to forecasts of heavy rainfall.
The warning, released through the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning (FEW) Centre, urged state governments, agencies, and residents in high-risk areas to take immediate precautionary measures to protect lives and property.
In a circular signed by Malam Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the ministry identified the following states as high-risk:
Adamawa
Bauchi
Nasarawa
Kaduna
Katsina
Kebbi
Kano
Niger
Taraba
Jigawa
Yobe
Zamfara
Sokoto
Borno
Kwara
Prominent towns and communities on the watchlist include Jimeta, Mubi, Keffi, Kafanchan, Birnin Kebbi, Minna, Gusau, and Sokoto.
Kebbi State is expected to face the most severe impact, with about 10 major towns flagged for potential flooding, including Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu, Jega, and Birnin Kebbi.
The ministry appealed for prompt feedback from stakeholders and rapid emergency responses to any flooding incidents. It also recalled that similar alerts were issued to 11 states last month, stressing that proactive action is critical to minimising disaster impacts.
