Why Tinubu Will Get Over 70% of South-East Votes in 2027 — Benjamin Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed confidence that the South-East region will strongly back President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, predicting that Tinubu will secure over 70 percent of votes from the zone.

Speaking on Friday during an event held in his honour in Ntalakwu, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Kalu said Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated an unprecedented commitment to addressing the longstanding needs of the Igbo people. He credited the president for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law, describing it as a landmark move that fulfilled a promise made to the region over five decades ago.

“No other president has remembered the promise made to Igbo people after the war like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Kalu said. “Fifty years came and passed, administrations came and passed; none of them deemed it right to fulfil those promises made to Ndi Igbo, and only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took it upon himself.”

He added that the SEDC provides a vital platform for developing rural communities across the region and noted that the president not only signed the bill into law but has already begun funding it, despite skepticism from critics.

Kalu, who sponsored the SEDC bill, emphasized that the Igbo people would remember and reward Tinubu for his efforts. “We are promising the president 70 to 80 percent of votes from Igboland. Let us continue to remain as people that love peace and unity,” he said.

The SEDC Bill was signed into law in July 2024. Kalu has consistently lauded the move, often urging the South-East electorate to “invest” their votes in Tinubu to ensure his re-election in 2027.

In the 2023 election, Tinubu received only 5.8 percent of votes from the region, while Labour Party candidate Peter Obi dominated with nearly 90 percent. Kalu believes that support will shift significantly in Tinubu’s favour in the next election cycle.
