Why Justice Okoro Visited Edo State Amidst Guber Case in Court – Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has clarified the reason behind Justice Inyang Okoro’s recent visit to Edo State, debunking online claims that the trip was politically motivated or connected to a gubernatorial case currently before the court.
In a statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Festus Akande, the court described the allegation as false and misleading, noting that its attention was drawn to the narrative trending on social media and various online platforms.
According to the statement, Justice Okoro travelled to Benin City on Thursday, June 12, 2025, solely to attend the funeral of the late mother of Mr. Hannibal Uwaifo, a senior lawyer and former President of the African Bar Association. The court emphasized that the visit was strictly personal and had no link whatsoever to any pending case.
The statement also confirmed that Justice Okoro had obtained formal approval from the Chief Justice of Nigeria before making the trip, in line with standard procedure.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Justice in question neither attended any political meeting nor lobbied to be included on any panel, as falsely alleged. He attended the funeral service at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, made a brief stop at the service of songs, and returned to his hotel without participating in any other gathering,” the statement read.
It added that a photo being circulated online—purportedly as evidence of misconduct—merely shows the Justice walking alone back to his hotel, which does not support the claims being made.
The Supreme Court cautioned the public and commentators on judicial matters against spreading unverified and damaging information. It urged those with questions or concerns to seek clarification through the court’s official communication channels.
Reiterating its commitment to the rule of law and judicial integrity, the apex court warned against deliberate efforts to mislead the public or undermine confidence in the judiciary.
