Trump Calls Supreme Court Ruling a “Disgrace” After 6–3 Decision Against Global Tariffs
US President Donald Trump sharply condemned the Supreme Court after the court struck down his broad tariff policy in a 6–3 decision on Friday.
Reports indicate Trump reacted strongly during a White House breakfast with governors, calling the ruling a “disgrace to our nation.”
The court determined that the tariffs exceeded the authority granted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which limits presidential trade actions to “unusual and extraordinary” situations tied to a declared national emergency.
In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the president cannot impose tariffs of unlimited “amount, duration, and scope” without explicit congressional approval. He was joined by conservative Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, along with the court’s three liberal justices.
Democrats and other lawmakers welcomed the ruling, framing it as a protection for consumers and a reinforcement of the constitutional balance of power.
The decision follows previous judgments by lower courts, including the United States Court of International Trade, which concluded the administration overstepped its authority in declaring a national emergency to justify the tariffs.
