Why I’m Opposed to Ongoing Strike by Labour Unions – Adams Oshiomhole
In a recent statement at the presidential villa, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed his dissent towards the ongoing strike by labour unions. Oshiomhole, now representing Edo North senatorial district, emphasized that the strike should be called to address the myriad issues currently affecting Nigerian workers.
While addressing journalists during a solidarity visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima, Oshiomhole cautioned labour unions against aligning with specific political interests. He urged them to focus on their primary responsibilities and refrain from being swayed by partisan influences.
The former Labour leader acknowledged the challenges faced by workers but stressed the importance of prioritizing issues directly impacting their well-being. Oshiomhole revealed that he would have supported the strike if it had been called to address the pressing concerns of Nigerian workers.
As a senator, Oshiomhole declared his unwavering commitment to the interests of labour, emphasizing that his allegiance lies with the workers. He urged the labour unions to robustly engage with state governments that are not implementing the agreed-upon N35,000 minimum wage.
In light of the recent directive by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for an indefinite nationwide strike, Oshiomhole’s stance adds a significant voice to the ongoing discourse surrounding the welfare and rights of Nigerian workers.
