Why I chose to skip Trump’s inauguration – Michelle Obama
In a candid conversation on her podcast IMO with Michelle Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama explained the personal reasons behind her decision to skip President Donald Trump’s second inauguration earlier this year. The choice sparked a wave of speculation and criticism, but Obama made it clear that her decision was a reflection of her commitment to prioritize her own well-being, even if it went against public expectations.
Speaking with actress Taraji P. Henson on the April 23 episode, Obama discussed the challenges of making a choice that was solely for her, despite the pressure to conform to what others might deem as the “right” decision. She shared that her actions were met with ridicule, with some even speculating that her marriage was in trouble. However, Obama emphasized that her decision was about taking ownership of her life and honoring her own needs.
“It took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but do the things that [were] for me — that was a hard thing for me to do,” Obama admitted. She further revealed the extent to which she committed to her decision, explaining that she deliberately avoided any temptation to change her mind. “It started with not having anything to wear,” she said. “I mean, I had affirmatively — because I am always prepared for any funeral, anything. I walk around with the right dress, I travel with clothes just in case something pops off.”
Obama’s decision to prioritize her peace and well-being wasn’t just about her; she also wanted to set a positive example for her daughters, Malia and Sasha. She shared that she wanted them to learn the importance of setting boundaries and practicing self-care, which she described as a muscle that must be built over time. “I want them to start practicing now the art of saying ‘no,’” Obama explained.
Earlier this month, during an appearance on the *Work in Progress* podcast with Sophia Bush, Obama reflected on the societal pressures women face when they make choices for themselves. She noted that her decision was misunderstood by many, who assumed that there must be something negative behind it. She expressed frustration with the stereotype that women must always put others first, regardless of their own needs.
In closing, Obama shared a powerful message about self-determination and the importance of making decisions for oneself: “I feel like it’s time for me to make some big girl decisions about my life and own it fully.”
