Why Crystal Palace Could Miss the Europa League Despite Historic Qualification

Crystal Palace’s stunning FA Cup final victory over Manchester City earned them a place in next season’s Europa League, marking a major milestone for the club. However, their participation is now in doubt due to UEFA’s strict multi-club ownership rules.

UEFA regulations prohibit individuals from holding significant control over multiple clubs competing in its tournaments simultaneously, in order to preserve competitive integrity. Palace is now under scrutiny because two of its key shareholders are involved with other European clubs.

John Textor, who owns 45% of Crystal Palace, is also the majority owner of Olympique Lyonnais, a French side that has also qualified for the Europa League. Another Palace investor, David Blitzer, holds an 18% stake in the club and has substantial holdings in Brøndby IF, which will compete in the Europa Conference League.

This overlap in club ownership has triggered a UEFA review. In an effort to comply with the rules, Textor and Blitzer have proposed placing their shares in a blind trust, a solution UEFA has previously accepted in similar cases. But whether that will be approved in time remains uncertain.

Should UEFA reject the proposed arrangement or if a resolution is not reached swiftly, Crystal Palace could be barred from the Europa League. Nottingham Forest, who finished higher in the Premier League table, would likely take their place, with Brighton potentially moving into the Conference League.

Textor has expressed his intention to sell his stake in Palace to eliminate the conflict of interest. However, with the Europa League draw scheduled for June 17, 2025, it is unclear whether a sale can be finalized in time to preserve Palace’s European dream.
