Ex-Crystal Palace Footballer Jailed for 14 Years Over £2.36m Crystal Meth Bust
Former Crystal Palace defender Michael Boateng has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after police discovered £2.36 million worth of crystal meth in his possession. The 34-year-old, once a promising Championship player, played what the judge described as a “significant role” in an organised crime group. Officers found 19.7kg of the Class A drug in a Slazenger sports bag during a raid on his Croydon flat on Valentine’s Day 2024, in what is believed to be one of the largest crystal meth seizures ever made in the UK.
Boateng, who had been on bail for earlier drug offences, admitted intent to supply crystal meth, cocaine, and MDMA. His previous arrest in September 2023 followed a police stop in Bromley, during which he was caught with cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, and cash. A search of his flat uncovered further quantities of the drugs, leading to charges that carried strict bail conditions.
Prosecutors told Croydon Crown Court that Boateng was trusted to safeguard a huge shipment of crystal meth, which carried a wholesale value of up to £400,000 and a street value exceeding £2.3 million. CCTV footage showed him receiving the bag a week before the raid. Defence lawyer Paul Crampin suggested that coercion or intimidation from organised criminals could not be ruled out, noting that Boateng had faced a credible death threat in 2022 and later turned to drug use after personal difficulties.
Judge Daniel Flahive rejected the notion that Boateng’s role was minimal, citing the quantity of drugs, the value involved, and the fact that the offence occurred while he was already on bail. The judge emphasised that the lengthy sentence reflected both the scale of the operation and Boateng’s trusted position within it.
Boateng’s football career began at Crystal Palace’s academy between 2005 and 2007, before spells at Bristol Rovers, Sutton United, Newport County, and Whitehawk. His career ended in disgrace after a 2013 match-fixing probe, which led to a prison sentence, a lifetime ban from football, and further convictions for drug dealing in 2015.
