We’re Ready to Rescue Anambra from ‘Unknown Gunmen’ – NFSS
The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has announced its readiness to partner with the Anambra State Government in combating the menace of criminal activities in the state’s forests. The service expressed its determination to dismantle hideouts used by kidnappers, killers, and other criminal groups operating in Anambra’s hinterlands.
Destiny Jonas, Commander of the NFSS Anambra State Command, revealed this in a statement issued in Abuja. He noted that the recent spate of violent crimes, including the kidnapping of a state lawmaker, the abduction of an Anglican clergy, and the killing of a Catholic priest, underscores the urgency for concerted security efforts. The December 30, 2024, attack that claimed eight lives in Chigbonu village, Ihiala, further highlights the need for immediate action.
Jonas emphasized that the NFSS, with its expertise in forest operations and knowledge of local terrains, is well-equipped to contribute to the state’s security initiatives, particularly the “Operation Udo Ga Di Na Anambra Security Initiative.” He stated that the service is ready to collaborate with other security agencies to reclaim the forests and bushes for both security and economic purposes. However, he stressed the need for government recognition and collaborative discussions to fully implement their plans.
The commander expressed concern over the economic implications of the rising insecurity, noting that many investors are relocating from Anambra due to safety concerns. Despite these challenges, NFSS operatives have been working alongside police and other security agencies to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the festive season.
Jonas highlighted the service’s success in maintaining security in remote areas such as Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe, which remained peaceful due to NFSS presence. Additionally, the service has identified several high-risk zones where it plans to launch large-scale operations against criminal camps starting this month, pending official authorization.
During the yuletide, NFSS operatives rescued several kidnapped victims, reaffirming their commitment to eradicating criminal activities such as deforestation, kidnappings, and other offenses in Anambra’s forests.
Jonas praised Dr. John Metchie, NFSS Deputy Commander-General for Intelligence, for his unwavering support, describing him as a key figure in ensuring the safety and security of Anambra citizens. He also commended Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, NFSS Commander-General, for fostering unity and cohesion within the service.
The NFSS reiterated its commitment to making Anambra forests safe and secure, urging authorities to expedite the recognition and support needed to carry out their mission effectively.
