“We Won’t Vote for a President Who Imports Alcohol to the North” – APC Chieftain Targets Peter Obi
A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alwan Hassan, has stated that the North will not support Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, citing Obi’s involvement in the alcohol industry as a key reason.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Hassan criticised Obi for promoting a brewery in Anambra State and being a major player in alcohol importation, which he argued runs contrary to the values of Northern Nigeria.
“Who else do you think will defeat Asiwaju in 2027? Peter Obi that was on your programme saying he wants the North to support him and in the same programme he was celebrating a brewery in Anambra State and being the biggest importer of alcohol,” he said. “And you want the North to vote for him? We will vote for a president that will import alcohol in the North?”
Hassan maintained that the North would not align with a candidate whose business interests, in his view, contradict the predominantly Muslim region’s cultural and religious beliefs.
Obi, who has declared his intention to run in 2027 with a one-term commitment, has faced a wave of criticism from ruling party figures since announcing his ambition.
The APC stalwart also dismissed the credibility of the opposition alliance recently formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as an uncoordinated coalition motivated by personal ambition. “The ADC is a coalition of angry people with a strategy. Everyone of them wants to be president. Asiwaju will be president,” he said.
The alliance, which includes Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and other political heavyweights, has presented itself as a formidable challenge to the ruling party ahead of 2027. However, Hassan insisted the group poses no real threat, expressing confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prospects for re-election.
“With the facts on the ground, President Tinubu will be re-elected in sha Allah,” he added.
