“We Won’t Contest LG Election Results” – Rivers Councillorship Candidates

The Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for the 2024 local government elections in Rivers State has announced that they will not contest the results of the October 5 elections in court, signaling their commitment to peace and development in the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Akwu Chilegide Jonathan, Chairman of the Forum and Accord Party’s candidate for Ward 1 in Emohua Local Government Area, emphasized the Coalition’s resolve to support the state government. “We will not challenge the election results in court to foster peace and collective development in Rivers State, and to back Governor Siminalayi Fubara at this critical time,” Jonathan stated.

Despite the election outcomes not favoring their camp, Jonathan stressed the importance of peace and unity in the state, highlighting that their decision is aimed at promoting the greater good of Rivers State.

In light of recent incidents of vandalism targeting local government offices, the Coalition condemned these acts and called on law enforcement to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Cyril Nwaoma, Secretary of the Coalition, echoed these sentiments, urging the governor to engage with the Coalition at the grassroots level to address the needs of communities across the state. Nwaoma stressed that all candidates had put in significant efforts during the elections and are now eager to contribute to the state’s progress.

The Coalition also appealed to the youth of Rivers State to refrain from violence and unlawful actions, advising them to resist exploitation. They reiterated their readiness to work collaboratively with Governor Fubara, focusing on inclusive representation and grassroots development.

This declaration follows a similar pledge from the Coalition of Chairmanship Candidates, who also voiced their support for Governor Fubara, citing the need for peace and unity in Rivers State.
