Ballot Boxes Set on Fire in Two US States as Citizens Cast Early Vote
In the run-up to the U.S. presidential election, ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire, marking a troubling escalation in election-related tensions. These incidents occurred as Americans participate in early voting, with just days left before the official election day.
Authorities in both Portland and Vancouver report that these fire attacks are likely connected to a similar incident on October 8, where an incendiary device was placed in a Vancouver ballot drop box. Surveillance footage shows an identical Volvo vehicle present at each site, suggesting a coordinated effort. Police have described the acts as targeted and deliberate, stating that hundreds of ballots were destroyed in the process.
The fires come as nearly 42 million Americans have already cast their ballots, underscoring the high stakes and intensity of this election season. Both Oregon and Washington are states that conduct elections primarily by mail, allowing residents to vote by returning ballots through the mail or placing them in secure ballot drop boxes.
In response, Washington’s Secretary of State, Steve Hobbs, issued a strong statement condemning any attempts to disrupt the democratic process. “I strongly denounce any acts of terror that aim to disrupt lawful and fair elections in Washington state,” Hobbs stated, emphasizing that election integrity will be upheld despite any threats or violence.
To ensure their votes are counted, authorities are advising voters to check the status of their ballots online. If a ballot has not been marked “received,” voters can request a replacement either online or in person at local election offices.
In the U.S., registered voters receive their ballots by mail a few weeks before election day and can return them by mail or by placing them in designated drop boxes. The recent arson incidents have heightened concerns, but election officials assure voters that security measures are in place to protect both the voting process and the integrity of the election.
