“We will go ahead with our congresses” — Abdullahi insists as ADC defies INEC stance
Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says the party will proceed with its planned congresses and national convention despite the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on its internal leadership dispute.
Speaking on Thursday during an appearance on Arise TV, Abdullahi said the party had already complied with notification requirements.
According to him, ADC issued INEC a 21-day notice for the congresses and convention, which he said the commission acknowledged.
“We will go ahead with our congresses. Whether they attend or not, the process will continue, including the convention,” he said.
INEC had earlier stated that it would no longer recognise factions of the party led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala, following its review of a court of appeal judgment.
Responding to the decision, Abdullahi alleged that the commission acted under pressure from the federal government. He said recent developments reflect concerns over opposition activity.
He also raised allegations of efforts to shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections in favour of Bola Tinubu.
Abdullahi criticised INEC’s proposed voter revalidation exercise, describing it as potentially disruptive to voter participation.
He argued that requiring voters to revalidate their cards close to an election could create confusion and discourage turnout.
He added that the situation raises broader concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy and its trajectory.
