WAEC Introduces Resit Exams for Candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has launched a new initiative allowing candidates to resit their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers earlier than ever. This groundbreaking measure eliminates the long wait for the next private exam cycle, offering students the chance to retake their exams between January and February 2025.

John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, shared details about the programme, known as WASSCE PC1, during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show in Ghana on December 31, 2024. He described it as a faster pathway for students aiming to improve their grades.

“Candidates who access their results and wish to resit one or two papers have until January 8 to register through our website or at WAEC-accredited internet cafés,” Kapi stated. The resit exams are scheduled to take place from January 24 to February 15, 2025.

To support candidates, WAEC intends to fast-track the release of chief examiners’ reports, providing comprehensive feedback on common errors and guidance for better preparation. Kapi emphasized that WAEC has extensively publicized the programme through its website, banners, and results-checker platform to ensure awareness among students and parents.

Students whose results were cancelled are also eligible to participate, provided they are not serving bans due to malpractice. However, due to the expected low turnout, the exams will initially be held only in regional capitals.

Kapi encouraged prospective candidates to complete registration by the January 8 deadline to seize this opportunity. WAEC expressed optimism that the initiative will help students quickly improve their grades and meet admission requirements, saving them from a year-long academic delay.
