JUST IN: WAEC Releases WASSCE 2023 Private Candidates’ Results, 44.29% Pass Rate
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates conducted between October 27 and December 20, 2023.
According to a statement from WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosore Adesina, a total of 85,600 candidates registered for the examination. However, 80,904 candidates actively participated in the exams across 568 centers nationwide.
Of those who sat the exams, WAEC reported that 49.18% were male candidates, totaling 39,790, while 50.82% were female candidates, making up 41,114 candidates.
The examination body disclosed that 96.93% of candidates had their results fully processed and released, while 3.07% had some subjects still under processing due to errors traceable to them. WAEC assured that efforts are underway to expedite the processing for the affected candidates.
For admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, candidates are expected to obtain credits in five relevant subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. From the total candidates who sat the examination, only 44.29%, equivalent to 35,830 candidates, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Breaking down the pass rate, WAEC highlighted that out of the candidates who secured credits, 49.21% were male candidates, while 50.79% were female candidates. Additionally, 57.19% of candidates secured credits in five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics.
WAEC emphasized that the pass rate analysis should not be compared with the WASSCE for school candidates, as private candidates have the flexibility to choose the number of subjects they want to write.
However, a notable concern arose as WAEC revealed that 8.89% of candidates, totaling 7,192, had their results withheld due to alleged infractions. The examination body assured that investigations are ongoing, and decisions will be communicated directly to the affected candidates.
Candidates are urged to check their results on WAEC’s website and confirm their status before accessing digital copies of their certificates. Notably, out of the 80,904 candidates who sat the examinations, 211 had varying degrees of special needs, with appropriate provisions made for their administration of the examination, including 33 visually challenged candidates, 21 with impaired hearing, and 30 Albinos.
