Labour Strike Will Not Disrupt Ongoing WAEC Exams, Confirms Branch Controller
Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, the Branch Controller (Ekiti) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has reassured stakeholders that the impending nationwide strike, slated to commence on Monday, will not impede the ongoing examinations across the country.
In a letter addressed to principals and school proprietors in Ekiti State titled “Notice of commencement of indefinite strike by NLC and TUC” with reference number EK/BC/SC/EXAM/07/Vol.1/89, Mrs. Lawson affirmed the council’s commitment to conducting the examinations as scheduled.
According to the letter, WAEC remains resolute in its decision to proceed with the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) despite the industrial action initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Mrs. Lawson emphasized the importance of ensuring that students do not bear the brunt of the labor dispute, stating, “The WASSCE SC is going on across the member Countries of WAEC and the Nigerian Child should not be put to a disadvantage of missing the exam.”
She urged school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public to take note of the council’s decision and make appropriate arrangements for candidates to sit for the examinations without disruption.
While acknowledging the concerns raised by the unions and the public, Mrs. Lawson underscored WAEC’s responsibility to uphold the integrity and continuity of the examination process across West Africa.
The letter concluded with a plea for cooperation and adherence to the council’s directives to ensure a smooth and successful conduct of the examinations.
