Nigerian Government Receives 30,000 Successful Applications for Student Loan Scheme, Announces Next Phase
The Nigerian government has reported approximately 30,000 successful applications for its student loan scheme just one week after the portal was launched on May 24, 2024.
Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), provided this update in Abuja on Thursday. He explained that these 30,000 students are currently undergoing an approval evaluation process.
Sawyerr announced that applications for the loan will open to state higher institutions on June 25, 2024. He emphasized that the scheme not only provides financial assistance but also aims to equip youths with employable skills.
“Beyond financial assistance, NELFUND recognizes the profound importance of equipping our youth with practical, market-relevant skills,” Sawyerr stated. He revealed that in six months, NELFUND will launch a comprehensive skills acquisition program, offering training in various vocational and technical fields. This initiative is designed to prepare students to meet the demands of the modern job market and to foster entrepreneurship and innovation among young people.
“Sixty thousand have registered on the platform, and about 30,000 have successfully applied for the loan. However, this does not mean all 30,000 have been approved. The evaluation process is now underway,” he added.
Sawyerr noted that the overwhelming response highlights the critical need for financial assistance among Nigerian students and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing this urgent demand.
This development follows the signing of the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at providing Nigerian students with financial support for their education.
