Viral Boy from Peter Obi’s 2023 Campaign Convoy Photo Now Languishing in Kirikiri Prison
The young boy who gained national attention after being photographed standing in front of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s campaign convoy in 2023 is now reportedly in Kirikiri Prison, Lagos State.
According to reports circulating on social media, the boy was returning from work when he was apprehended in his neighborhood by a group of individuals who accused him of theft and public fighting. Eyewitnesses and supporters insist the allegations are false and claim he is being unfairly targeted due to public perceptions formed after his moment in the spotlight during the 2023 elections, when he received financial gifts.
An X user, @Hausa_girl, brought renewed attention to the case, sharing updates on Monday. She stated that she had spoken with the boy’s mother and attended his court hearing at Orege Court in Ajegunle on March 27, which was adjourned until April 28. She emphasized that the matter is now with the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which is expected to provide legal advice on how the case should proceed.
Supporters say the boy knows the identities of those who falsely accused him and even named the individual who allegedly stole his phone. Despite this, he is facing charges of stealing and public fighting.
Efforts are underway to secure legal support for the boy. The same X user noted that discussions are ongoing with human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, with plans to visit the correctional facility alongside the boy’s mother for a full briefing.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has also weighed in, calling for immediate intervention. In a post on his X handle, Sowore appealed to anyone with access to the boy’s legal team or family to get in touch urgently, stressing the importance of rescuing him given the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
