Video: Unknown Gunmen Taunt Police After Deadly Imo Attack, Flash Stolen Rifles
Unknown Gunmen suspected to be behind Sunday’s deadly attack on a police patrol team in Imo State have released a video mocking security forces, flashing rifles believed to be taken from the slain officers, and threatening further violence. The attack occurred in the morning hours of July 6 at Finas Gas Station along the Okigwe-Umuahia Road.
The armed assailants ambushed a police team stationed near the Old Gariki area in Okigwe, killing Police Constable Oluebube on the spot and seizing his service weapon. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Casmir, who led the team, has since been declared missing along with his AK-47 rifle, raising concerns that he may have been abducted. Other officers from the team reportedly made it back to base with their rifles and are receiving medical attention.
In a 1-minute, 47-second video obtained on Sunday evening, the gunmen can be seen displaying two firearms—one believed to be an AK-47—while issuing threats against police, military, and DSS personnel operating in the Okigwe axis. The attackers accused security forces of extortion and extrajudicial killings and claimed their assault was in retaliation for the alleged misconduct by officers at the checkpoint.
The Imo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for ASP Casmir and vowed to recover his weapon. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down the attackers and bring them to justice.
