Video: 71-Year-Old Man Spends 55 Years in Isolation Due to Fear of Women
Callixte Nzamwita, a 71-year-old resident of Rwanda, has lived in isolation for over half a century due to an extreme fear of women, known as gynophobia. Despite this unique condition, Mr. Nzamwita appears content with his solitary life, which he has maintained since the age of 16.
In a heart-wrenching tale of isolation, Callixte Nzamwita, now 71, has spent the past 55 years avoiding all contact with women due to a severe case of gynophobia, an irrational and overwhelming fear of women. While gynophobia is considered a specific phobia, it is not officially recognized as a mental disorder.
At the tender age of 16, Mr. Nzamwita began his self-imposed confinement, where he undertook all aspects of life, from sleeping to cooking, in isolation. “I locked myself inside my house with a fence to ensure that women cannot come closer to me,” he shared in a recent video interview.
Neighbors and well-wishers have attempted to offer assistance to Mr. Nzamwita, but his fear of women remains an insurmountable barrier. A nearby female neighbor, speaking on the condition of anonymity, explained, “Surprisingly, even though he is afraid of women, we are the ones who help him get food and other basic necessities.”
Despite his reclusive lifestyle, Mr. Nzamwita seems content and has no desire for female company. It is worth noting that specific phobias like gynophobia can develop during childhood or adolescence and may become less severe with age.
Another neighbor further elaborated on the challenging nature of their attempts to help Mr. Nzamwita, stating, “When we tried to help him, he stopped us from approaching or talking to him. We deliver the items to his house, and then he collects them. He may not allow us to approach him, but he accepts our gifts from afar.”
The symptoms of gynophobia include an overwhelming fear of women, anxiety triggered by the mere thought of them, panic attacks, chest tightness, profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty in breathing.
This extraordinary story shines a spotlight on the profound impact that specific phobias can have on an individual’s life. It underscores the importance of understanding and showing empathy for those grappling with such debilitating fears. Callixte Nzamwita’s story is a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of extraordinary challenges.
